Design Trends That Are Here to Stay
Dramatic Staircases
Staircases are certainly a functional necessity of multi-level homes, but they are often overlooked as a focal point. Treating staircases as a central design element creates a new canvas on which to experiment, opening interesting visual possibilities in any space.
Especially in luxury homes, large staircases are often right inside the front door and are ripe for a grand entrance moment. Staircases provide a wonderful opportunity to add design touches that should be incorporated into the overall space, rather than simply left alone.
A TINGE, OR MORE OF VERY PERI
How do you define a year? In color—at least that is how it’s done by the team at Pantone, the world’s leading color authority. Pantone’s experts research trends across the globe, looking for one shade that will embody the mood of the coming year and that will influence everything from fashion and beauty to interior design and product packaging.
This year, Pantone selected a violet-tinged blue hue—Very Peri—for its color of the year. The warm blue of Very Peri invites creativity and embraces a new future full of digital possibilities, mixing old and new.
If you want to switch up the mood in your home, Very Peri may be your way to add a fresh tone and hue to your already exciting design elements.
Natural Elements
Numerous studies have shown the benefits of spending time in nature—from reducing stress and anxiety to lowering blood pressure and increasing production of the happiness molecule, dopamine. Forest bathing, forest schools and eco-retreats have all capitalized on the feel-good side effects of nature.
Interior designers are now bringing that feeling indoors. Connecting the immediate outdoors with the interiors of the home is a great place to start a biophilia-centric home. Using plants as decorative touches fulfills this instinct by bringing nature indoors and creating a sense of well-being in personal spaces.
Natural elements also can be introduced as large trees spanning tall spaces, indoor gardens in key areas of a home and, in smaller areas, ornamental seasonal branches, from cherry blossoms and pussy willow to huge swathes of jasmine or roses to scented pine.
Sculptural Lighting
Light fixtures are an oft-overlooked part of home décor, but savvy interior designers know that they can be some of the most important elements in a room.
Lights can define separate spaces in an open-floor plan or add texture and interest in an area that is flat and one-dimensional. A large fixture hanging from the ceiling adds another layer to a space to draw the eye away from always looking at the same level.
Sculptural lighting fixtures, in particular, can transform your space—becoming a work of art that are not just for seeing when it gets dark, but that serve as the spark to electrify your overall interior atmosphere.
