History of Somers Point

Somers Point was once a shipbuilding center that employed primarily sea captains, fishermen, and clammers. When it was incorporated in 1888, the town had a population of only 48, but its recorded history predates even this, since the area includes the oldest home in Atlantic County. Built in 1725, Somer's Mansion was acquired by the city in 1937 and is now available for public tours. Here, you can view furnishings and décor from the 18th century and learn how the first Somers Point settlers lived.
