Living in Crestwood, Washington D.C.

Finding a spot of serenity and peace in the midst of a major city seems like a pipe dream, but in Crestwood, D.C. find yourself in an idyllic urban landscape. Green lawns, spacious homes and almost no traffic are just some of the benefits of living in this quiet residential neighborhood north of Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant.

A Brief Neighborhood History

Crestwood was originally a single, 300-acre estate that was broken up for single family homes in the early 20th century. Surrounded almost entirely by Rock Creek Park, this unique neighborhood is a suburb planted in the heart of the city. Rock Creek Park offers plenty of activities, with 32 miles of trails, picnic spots, planetarium programs and more. Enjoy living next to this expansive urban greenscape when you buy one of the Crestwood homes for sale in the area. Houses typically sit on large plots of land, giving homeowners extra outdoor space for entertaining or adding amenities.

Located only 3.7 miles from the White House and 6.5 miles from Capitol Hill, Crestwood homes offer a central location without constant city noises and traffic.

Housing in the Area

Most Crestwood homes are large colonials with more than four bedrooms, although there are some Tudor and ranch-style offerings. The price tag of Crestwood real estate lines up with the size and amenities offered at each house, but prices are still substantially lower than homeowners might expect to pay on the west side of the park. Row houses are the residence of choice on a few blocks, although there are very few rental options. On 16th Street, a single building holds the entire inventory of available Crestwood apartments.

Living in Crestwood

Although only about 600 residents live in the neighborhood, the tight-knit Crestwood community has very low turnover. An active community and neighborhood watch association works to keep the neighborhood clean and crime-free, which helps preserve the value of Crestwood real estate. Ultimately, it is the large yards, quiet streets and oasis of green that keeps residents content in this tucked-away neighborhood.

Finding large homes available at a reasonable price is almost impossible in the city and it's not easy in Crestwood, either. Low turnover means that houses don't come on the market too often. Interested buyers should move quickly if they want to make an offer.

Crestwood Shopping and Entertainment

Part of what makes this area unique is that there are no commercial zones. This means no Crestwood restaurants or shops, but that's not a major inconvenience since there are stores in nearby Petworth, and the shops of Columbia Heights are just 1.5 miles away.
