The city of Isle of Palms is small, with just under 4,500 residents. It boasts a kid-friendly atmosphere and loads of activities to keep families busy. Take the kids fishing and kayaking, burn off energy at the playgrounds or build sandcastles at Isle of Palms County Park. Golfers can find paradise at Wild Dunes ResortWild Dunes Resort, 1,600 oceanfront acres on the island’s north end encompassing two courses designed by famed golf course architect Tom Fazio. Even if you don’t play, you might want to obtain a golf cart permit from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, so you can low-speed cruise to the beach on the island's side roads. Isle of Palms has a small business and entertainment district known as Front Beach, offering up local fare on Ocean Boulevard between 10th and 14th avenues. For bigger shopping trips, Isle of Palms residents usually drive to the town's larger neighbor, Mount Pleasant.

Transportation and Travel on Edisto Island

Isle of Palms is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Charleston and is most easily reached by automobile. Taxi and rideshare services operate on the island. With its Beach Reach shuttle, CARTA offers limited service from Mount Pleasant to the beaches of Isle of Palms during the summer season. Isle of Palms is about 20 miles by highway from Charleston International Airport.

  • For Fourth of July festivities, you can’t beat Independence Day on the Isle of Palms, with a golf cart parade in the morning and fireworks at night. Community volunteers clean up the beaches on July 5.
  • Isle of Pines County Park is the place to be for swimming, beach combing, picnicking, and every type of water sport.
