Founded in 1791, Georgetown is the county seat of Sussex County. Located less than 20 miles from some of Delaware’s premier beaches, including Lewes and Rehoboth, Georgetown prides itself on maintaining a less-hectic atmosphere than some of its coastal counterparts. Annual events, such as its summer concert series, further foster a sense of small-town community.
Things to Do in Georgetown
Seafaring history comes alive at Treasures of the Sea, an exhibit at Delaware Tech, where visitors get to see a real-life sunken treasure, valued at over $4 million. These artifacts come from the wreckage of the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a Spanish ship that went down off of the coast of Florida in the early 1600s. Local history buffs can turn to the Historic Georgetown Association, which has worked to restore the town’s first firehouse along with an historic train station.
Georgetown is a hidden gem for sports fans. Sports at the Beach is a sports complex that draws athletes and visitors from across the region. Home to several baseball tournaments, Sports at the Beach also features a basketball court, walking course, playgrounds, and even a dog park. Every year around Halloween, they also host Screams at the Beach, which offers half a dozen terror-filled attractions for those who are looking for a good scare.
Georgetown is perhaps best known as being the home of the Georgetown Speedway. Built in 1949, the dirt track speedway was instrumental in the rise of stock car racing across the country. Today, Georgetown Speedway hosts racing fans from March through November and even offers campsites for those who want to make a weekend of it.

Travel to area beaches is quick and easy, with Rt. 9 leading to Rehoboth and Lewes beaches, each at less than 20 miles away.
