Living in Federalsburg

Home to three different industrial parks, Federalsburg is the largest industrial area within Caroline County—the Eastern Shore's economic powerhouse. Nevertheless, Federalsburg, Maryland, has a small town feel, thanks in part to its modest Town Hall and small population.

While Federalsburg, Maryland, is known for industry, its real estate market also offers more than enough housing opportunities within the small town. Single-family homes, as well as apartments and townhomes, are available within town limits. Lots are also available if you would prefer to build a home yourself. Most of the homes for sale in Federalsburg are charming older homes with an historical flair.

Culture and Heritage

History abounds in the area, beginning with the political origin of the town's name. The town was originally called "Northwest Fork Bridge," based on the town's proximity to the northwest fork of the Nanticoke River. In 1812, the town's name was changed to Federalsburg, in part because the Federalist Party met frequently in the town.

Initially incorporated in 1823, Federalsburg began as a shipbuilding hub. However, the economic focus of the town began to pivot around the time of the Civil War, as new rail access expanded the town's access to distant markets. These railways continue to be integral to the town and its vibrant manufacturing industry.

Several historic buildings still stand in the town. For example, a property named Exeter was built around the turn of the 19th Century and is Federalsburg's oldest standing structure. Because it has been preserved so well, Exeter was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Information and artifacts from this home and others are displayed at the Federalsburg Historical Society and Museum.
