Historical sites include the river crossing where Harper ran his ferry, the Bolivar Heights Battlefield, John Brown's Fort, and the John Brown Wax Museum. There is also a haunted cottage that visitors can tour, as well as the Chamber of Commerce's tour of the Civil War battlefields.

Other sightseeing possibilities include hiking or biking around the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, the main attraction of town. This park features legendary beauty that left the likes of Thomas Jefferson in awe, and taking in the entire scene from Jefferson Rock is advised. Joining in field classroom experiences or heritage site tours is a great way to understand more about this important national park. Combining a trip through the park with a visit to the Civil War Living History Museum or walk along the Armory Trail Canal is a popular choice for many as well.

A 60-mile drive to the west or southwest of Harpers Ferry are the Appalachian Mountains. In West Virginia, the Appalachians are particularly rugged, which means Harpers Ferry is a hub for activities regardless of what direction you choose to drive.
