It was the site of a decisive battle during the Revolutionary War and a major transportation hub during the Civil War. The Monument to the Alliance and Victory, usually known as the Yorktown Victory Monument, was erected as a testament to the successful alliance between America and France, as well as the Revolutionary War victory.

Along the Atlantic Ocean lies Yorktown Beach, which offers two acres of sandy shores. Residents routinely hit the waves for top-notch surfing, fishing, and swimming. Riverwalk Landing, which borders the beach, has a number of boutique shops and decadent dining establishments. It combines the best of a boardwalk and historic locale.
