Five Steps to Becoming a Real Estate Agent in Washington DC

1. Do your research on the Washington DC real estate market.

Make sure you’re ready for the rewards and risks of running your own real estate business. Consider attending a career seminar at your local Long & Foster office. Or using the form below, schedule a private, confidential appointment with one of our recruiting associates, who can answer all of your questions.

2. Complete 60 hours of official pre-licensing classes.

Washington DC requires 60 hours of education, which you can take in a classroom or online. Contact the Long & Foster Institute of Real Estate to learn more.

3. Pass the Washington DC real estate exam.

A minimum score of 75 percent on the final exam is required in Washington, and there is no limit on the number of retakes.

4. Choose a broker to sponsor you.

To sell real estate in DC, a licensed broker must agree that you may affiliate with his or her brokerage. That broker will assist you in completing your license application.

5. Apply for a Washington DC real estate license.

The DC Real Estate Commission is the licensing authority for the state. Submit a completed and notarized application. If your application is approved and fees paid, you are a DC real estate agent.
