Living in Canton, MD

Canton, Maryland, has quickly become one of the most popular neighborhoods in metropolitan Baltimore, and it's easy to see why. Bordered by quaint Patterson Park to the north, the tranquil waters of the Patapsco River to the south, and located just two miles east of Baltimore's downtown district, Canton exudes a hip, modern vibe while staying true to its celebrated history as a fishing and industrial district. Trendy boutiques and bistros have set up shop in renovated factory buildings, and many young families have claimed the ubiquitous and aging row homes as their own, rehabilitating them to expose their beautiful brick facades.

Strolling Around Canton

Due to the revitalization efforts that have sprung up in Canton, MD, both commercial and residential buildings have been refurbished to suit many purposes. Commercial lofts have been converted into spacious residential apartments, and once-abandoned factories have taken on a second life as shopping malls and restaurants. The Can Company, a shopping mall located in an old industrial canning plant, is now one of the hottest destinations in the Canton neighborhood. Featuring a host of popular retailers and upscale dining options, the Can Company also provides visitors with amazing views of Canton Waterfront Park—a popular spot for morning walks and jogs.

Living in Canton can be a colorful affair. Painted window screens, once a dying art that's being brought back by proud residents, can be found on many storefronts and homes. The craft was first introduced to the area in 1913 by a Baltimore grocer and has quietly built a following among even the newest homeowners.

Homes by the Patapsco River

The Canton neighborhood was once a residential area for the blue-collar workforce of the Baltimore area and is known for its streets of brick row homes, which were built at the turn of the 20th century. Many Canton residents proudly point to their long history in the neighborhood, and live side by side with young professionals with growing families who have chosen Canton as a place to put down their own roots. Many of these new owners have opted to remove the formstone facades that were popularized in the 1940s and '50s, revealing the original brick in all of its glory.

Condominiums and apartments built in the frames of rehabilitated factories have also attracted young couples eager to partake in Canton's waterfront nightlife. Canton real estate is a diverse mixture of old and new, and the residents reflect this diversity.
