Built Along the Historic Railroad

Originally settled along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line, now Mount Airy, MD, is a charming town with an historic Main Street that features views of rolling hills. What was once a small collection of settlements near the slopes of Parr's Ridge in the 1830s has grown into a moderate-size town with a close-knit community. Legend says that a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad employee suggested naming the town "Mount Airy" after the cold winds that blew strongly across Parr's Ridge, freezing his ears. The townspeople took a vote and legally named the town "Mount Airy" around 1860.
