Living in Brigantine, NJ

Brigantine, New Jersey, is a seasonally popular South Jersey Shore beach resort with a history steeped in pirates and whaling. Once called Watamoonica, which is Lenape for "summer playground," the area was a beach getaway even for Native Americans. Today, Brigantine is known for soft, sandy beaches, designated fishing and surfing areas, and the protected dunes that in turn protect this barrier island.

Brigantine Beach Attractions

Once the site of more than 300 shipwrecks, Brigantine is also rumored to be the location of Captain Kidd's buried treasure. The Brigantine Light House was built too late to protect the island from both wrecks and pirates, but it has been a key focal point for the resort town since it was erected 90 years ago.

Brigantine, NJ, is also home to portions of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. Visitors to each attraction can learn more about island wildlife as well as the many species that regularly visit via sea and air. The Brigantine Beach Chamber of Commerce also recommends visits to the Farmer's Market, the beach areas that allow four-wheel driving and the Brigantine Beach Historical Museum.
