Hockessin is a family-oriented small town, where many of the residents turn out for the Fourth of July fireworks and parade, Halloween festivities, and annual relay races in which neighborhoods compete for a trophy and bragging rights. The community is home to Delaware Rush Soccer Club, and other youth sports that are popular among families. There are several retail centers for shopping and dining, including the original village center, home of the landmark Back Burner Restaurant and Tavern. It opened in the early 1970s and is known for its Better Cheddar dip.
