Living in Petworth, D.C.

Five miles north of Capitol Hill, Petworth, Washington, D.C., is one of the largest neighborhoods in the District. It was formed by two estates incorporated into the city in the late 1800s. Today you'll find an eclectic mix of old and new construction that is home to about 20,000 D.C. residents.

Things to Do

Metro-accessibility and the thriving commercial corridor are just two of the reasons young professionals and growing families are moving into the area. An engaged social community regularly undertakes neighborhood beautification projects, such as planting trees and gardens. The brick row homes are the hub of the city's renowned porch culture, where neighbors can spend time getting to know each other.

There are also plenty of recreational opportunities, such as those at the Petworth Recreation Center, where you can find one of the best kids' spray parks in the city. Petworth Park boasts extensive sport courts, kite-flying areas, and playgrounds. Along Upshur street, shop at the Petworth Community Market every Saturday from May to November or attend the yearly Celebrate Petworth festival in June.

Hungry? Head to Georgia Avenue on Petworth's west side. Enjoy eateries along the thoroughfare that specialize in ethnic cuisine including soul food, Ethiopian, Salvadoran, and Caribbean. You'll find other hip hangouts in Petworth, including Scandinavian food at Domku's Bar & Cafe and Japanese-inspired cuisine at Himitsu.

Why Live Here
