The community is situated across from the Rivanna River—a major trading route in the 18th and 19th centuries. Located to the south of Pantops, Interstate 64 connects residents with the cities of Richmond, Norfolk, and Chesapeake.

Pantops Mountain towers over the community and is the neighborhood's most famous geographical feature. In 1777, Thomas Jefferson purchased land at the foot of the mountain to use as a farm.
