Healthy Eating Tips for 2024

One of the most common ways to start a new year is with a resolve to eat better. Simple as that sounds, however, embarking on a healthier diet can be quite complicated given the myriad and often contradictory advice from health and fitness aficionados.

The following suggestions from New York Times health reporter Alice Callahan, however, are based in science, meaning that there's study and research that has proven the benefits to one's health. Consider making a few of the following changes to your diet this year to help improve your overall eating habits and your health.

Adopt the Mediterranean diet. This popular eating plan is backed by decades of research that points to a positive impact on heart health. And it tastes good, to boot! The Mediterranean diet is packed with flavorful options, such as fruits and veggies, legumes, olive oil, nuts and whole grains.

Have a healthy breakfast. While this certainly isn't a new idea, breakfast has taken a backseat for many in the advent of intermittent fasting. Nutrition experts, however, emphasize that starting the day with a healthy meal that includes protein, fiber and healthy fats can lead to a wide range of health benefits. Short on time? A good smoothie recipe will help you get all these nutrients in one shot.

Take care of your gut. You've probably heard a lot in recent years about the importance of "gut health," but it all boils down to keeping your digestive system running smoothly. This is relatively easy to accomplish by upping your intake of fiber and eating more plant-based and fermented foods.

Skip the protein bars. While increasing the amount of protein you eat is a good idea, protein bars are not the best way to go about it as most varieties have a high sugar content. Instead go directly to the source and eat more yogurt, nuts, beans or eggs.

Eat more tofu and cottage cheese. Research shows that eating soy-based foods like tofu may reduce your risk of heart disease, and possibly cancer. Meanwhile, cottage cheese is making a big comeback. A great source of protein and calcium, this versatile food works great with sweet and savory snacks alike.

Combine a couple of the above eating tips with more exercise in 2024, and you'll be well on your way to a healthier you!
