Seasonal Tips
Ringing in 2020 will likely ring in some slippery slush and ice! As we all know, many homes in SoCo do not have garages and if we do, let’s face it, we’re using them to store our kids toys and lawn mowers. Instead of reaching for a harmful deicer that is full of chemicals, try a more natural and bay-friendly approach. The best alternative is to use warm water mixed with table salt or water conditioning salt. Sand can also be helpful to improve traction on slippery surfaces. If those options are unavailable, Magnesium Chloride and Calcium Magnesium Acetate are the best alternatives to rock salt, which can be harmful to wildlife, plants, and underwater life. However, if rock salt is your only available option, you can still use it in a bay-friendly way: read the directions carefully, only use a handful of salt per square yard, and apply to a cleared surface. According to a recent article in Consumer Reports, pipes can freeze at approximately 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Pipes most likely to freeze are located in basements, attics, and garages or those running in cabinets or exterior walls. To avoid freezing pipes, keep the garage doors closed, keep your home set at a minimum of 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and eventually insulate all areas that may currently be uninsulated.
