Smithfield's Historic Significance

Smithfield is as old as the state of Virginia. Once settled by the Warraskoyack Native American tribe, it was discovered by Captain John Smith and his crew in the early 1600s, and then colonized by the British in 1634. Smithfield, Virginia, played a significant role in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and today boasts more than 70 different architecturally significant buildings. These include the Georgian-style Wentworth-Grinnan House, built in 1780, and the King-Atkinson House, built by revolutionary patriot Thomas King.
